Quantum leaps at ‘Kite’ rights

Pic vying for Oscar

Indie production and sales company Quantum Entertainment has acquired worldwide rights to the Philippine film “Saranggola” (aka “The Kite”) from Teamwork Prods.

After sweeping the awards at the Manila Film Festival in June, the film was selected as the official Philippine entry for best foreign language film for the 72nd Academy Awards.

Pic was produced and directed by Gil M. Portes; writers are Jose Y. Dalisay Jr. and Gil M. Portes.

“Saranggola” is based on a true story of a young Filipino boy who witnesses his father, a motorcycle cop, kill his best friend’s brother. While investigators search for leads, local gossip begins pointing toward the boy’s father because of his known abusive ways. It is this truth that the boy must ultimately face.

Director Portes developed a feature-length script on the lives of Filipinos in America for the American Playhouse.

His feature credits include such titles (in English) as “Deep in Paradise,” “Once There Was a Dream,” “Tomorrow’s Dream” and “America.”
