NEW YORK — Oliver Platt will play the deposed champion of Ted Turner’s grappling circuit WCW, and Scott Caan will join David Arquette as the tag team hellbent on helping the wrestler regain his title back in “Ready to Rumble,” the Warner Bros. comedy to be directed by Brian Robbins (“Varsity Blues”) from a script by Steven Brill (“The Mighty Ducks”). Shooting begins this fall.
Robbins pinned down Arquette for the first casting of a film that will exploit the synergy between the Time Warner-owned Warner Bros. and the WCW, whose president Eric Bischoff will be the film’s exec producer.
Platt will soon be seen in WB’s “Three to Tango,” opposite Robin Williams in Disney’s “Bicentennial Man” and alongside Liam Neeson and Sandra Bullock in “Gunshy.” He’s repped by William Morris, 3 Arts and attorney Karl Austen.
Caan, the son of “Godfather” star James Caan, rejoins director Robbins after playing a wild gridironer in “Varsity Blues.” Caan will start shooting a day after wrapping “Gone in Sixty Seconds” with Nicolas Cage, and will next be seen opposite Ben Affleck and Giovanni Ribisi in New Line’s “Boiler Room.”
Caan is repped by UTA and managed by Stacy Boniello at Blue Train Entertainment.
