Phaedra captures Indian ‘Terrorist’

Exhib buys rights to Cairo Fest's best pic

Phaedra Cinema has acquired North American rights to Santosh Sivan’s “The Terrorist,” an Indian film that debuted at Sundance earlier this year.

Phaedra plans a Jan. 14 Gotham bow, followed by openings in other major markets.

John Malkovich presents the helming bow of veteran cinematographer Sivan (Mani Rathnma’s “Roja”). Pic is inspired by events surrounding the assassination of Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by a suicide bomber (Ayesha Dharkar).

“The Terrorist” took home the best pic and actress awards at the Cairo Intl. Film Fest.

Producer Mark Burton of WonderFilms and Phaedra prexy Gregory Hatanaka and exec VP Roseann Cherenson negotiated the deal.
