NEW YORK — The East Coast premiere of actor Frank Whaley’s directorial debut “Joe the King” will open this year’s Independent Feature Film Market, the Independent Feature Project announced Wednesday.
Pic, which is being released by Trimark, stars Ethan Hawke, Val Kilmer and John Leguizamo.
Whaley won this year’s Waldo Salt screenwriting award at Sundance for the script, which depicts a teen-age boy’s attempt to rise out of the mire of his unhappy family.
“‘Joe the King’ perfectly reflects the combination of innovation and experience that characterizes this year’s IFFM,” IFP exec director Michelle Byrd said. The IFFM runs Sept. 17-24.
