NNW sets 2 pics for AFM

Company making confab bow

North by Northwest Entertainment is prepping for AFM with two completed features, “The Basket,” starring Karen Allen and Peter Coyote, and “Mel,” with Julie Hagerty and Ernest Borgnine.

The company — run by owners Greg Rathvon, David Tanner, Dan Heigh, Dave Holcomb, Mark Dahlstrom and Rich Cowan — will, for the first time, have a booth at the American Film Market.

“It’s important for us to be able to present our vision for our films to potential buyers,” said Dahlstrom. “We know how our films need to be presented so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.”

Dahlstrom added that the company, which has produced 12 features so far, would look to develop joint ventures with other AFM companies on future projects that North by Northwest has in development.

Allen and Coyote are joined by Amber Willenborg, Robert Karl Burke, Jock MacDonald, Ellen Travolta and Joey Travolta in “The Basket.”

Pic, helmed by Cowan, is the story of families forced to pick up the pieces after WWI as they deal with the arrival of a strange teacher with a new game — basketball.

In “Mel,” Greg Evigan, Jack Scalia, Bug Hall and Josh Paddock join Hagerty and Borgnine. Pic is about a larger-than-life turtle that provides magic for his young devotees.

AFM unspools Feb. 25-March 5 at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel and area theaters.
