BANGKOK –Tai Entertainment’s “Nang Nak,” is poised to soar past “Titanic” as the biggest film grosser in Thai history. The tragic love story, based on the legend of a Thai ghost, has generated nearly $3 million the first 10 days of release. The film is expected to sail past “Titanic’s” $6.75 million total. The success of the Thai film is being attributed to savvy marketing and heavy hype, which is now being fueled by its unusual box office success.
According to producer Wisute Poolvaralux, the Thai audience was “in the mood” for a good Thai movie having been disappointed with local releases in recent years.
