Tyro director Stephen Leeds is set to make his feature debut on “Honky!” for New Regency Prods.
Brad Krevoy and Doug Draizin will produce the pic starring D.L. Hughley, who toplines ABC’s “The Hughleys.”
Written by Phil Tag, Aaron Pugliese and Andrew Winer, “Honky!” follows two black producers who try to sink “Boogie Fever,” their third-rate version of “Soul Train.” With failure as their agenda, the duo find a white host who cannot dance.
New Regency will finance the $14 million pic, which starts filming this summer. Fox will probably distribute the comedy under its deal with Regency.
Leeds, a Columbia Film School grad, first gained Hollywood’s eye with his 20-minute short “Get That Number.” He follows in the tradition of Amy Heckerling, who was tapped by producer Art Linson to direct “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” off her short “Getting It Over With.” Linson also tapped Adam Collis to helm Fox 2000’s “Sunset Strip,” after seeing his short “Mad Boy, I’ll Blow Your Blues Away, Be Mine.”
ICM’s Jeff Gorin brokered the deal for Leeds, who is also attached to direct the indie “Doorman,” based on his original screenplay.
