NEW YORK — Universal has paid mid- against high-six figures for Greg Mitchell’s Little League baseball memoir “Joy in Mudville” for Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s production shingle, the Playtone Co.
Hanks is expected to produce the project, along with Goetzman.
Due out in March from Pocket Books, “Mudville” is a memoir that, while recalling the year that Mitchell managed his son’s Little League team all the way to the state finals, ruminates on the state of both modern baseball and today’s youth.
The book is a departure for Mitchell, who has previously written histories of Richard Nixon and Hiroshima.
Nan Shipley and Nina Phillips, Playtone’s Gotham-based book scouts, brought the property into the company.
CAA brokered the deal on behalf of Mitchell’s Gotham-based lit agent, Sarah Lazin.
