‘Free’ set for Oscar

MONTREAL — Swiss-Canadian helmer Lea Pool’s “Set Me Free” (Emporte-Moi) will rep Canada in the foreign-language Academy Award race. The French-language film is set to be released in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago in January by Merchant Ivory Distribution.

“Set Me Free” had its world preem at the Berlin Film Festival in February, where it nabbed a special prize from the Ecumenical Jury.

Gay-themed coming-of-age tale set in the early 1960s stars newcomer Vanasse, Pascale Bussieres and Yugoslavian thesp Miki Manojlovic. Montreal helmer Pool, whose previous pics include “La Femme de L’Hotel” and “Mouvements du Desire,” also wrote the pic.

“Free” was co-produced by Montreal-based Cite-Amerique, Switzerland’s Captics and France’s Haut et Court. It is currently playing in Toronto. TF1 is handling foreign distribution.
