Eye’s on the Tiger

English firm establishes film company

LONDON — Tiger Aspect Prods., co-producer of “Bean,” is setting up a film company, Tiger Aspect Pictures, under an overall deal with Working Title Films.

Aiming to develop and produce three films a year, the unit will be headed by Tiger Aspect chairman Peter Bennett-Jones, who also manages several of the U.K.’s top comedians through his company PBJ Management.

His client list includes Rowan Atkinson, Harry Enfield, Lenny Henry and Dylan Moran.

Big bucks

The new film company will draw on a significant discretionary fund from Working Title, which bankrolled “Bean” and is now owned by Universal Pictures.

“We’re not looking to make the next ‘Titanic’ but to create a slate of domestically based films building on our relationships with British talent,” Bennett-Jones said.

“Since the incredible success of ‘Bean,’ when we developed great relationships with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner at Working Title, it has certainly been an ambition of ours to make a more definite move into features,” he added.

First call

Working Title will have first call on all feature projects from Tiger Aspect Pictures. Bennett-Jones will take an executive producer credit exclusively on pics for Working Title.

Tiger Aspect is already in production with two movies, “Kevin and Perry Go Large” and “Dancer,” both of which will now come under the Tiger Aspect Pictures banner.

“Dancer,” written by Lee Hall and directed by Stephen Daldry, is a co-production with Working Title’s low-budget label WT2. It’s the poignant story of an 11-year-old boy in a tough mining village who wants to be a ballet dancer.

“Kevin and Perry Go Large” (formerly “Kevin and Perry — The Movie”), a spinoff from Harry Enfield’s BBC comedy show, is being financed by Icon Entertainment Intl.

‘Dog’ day

FilmFour is already lined up to fully finance “Dog Eat Dog,” a low-budget comedy set to shoot next spring, by first-time writer-director Moody Shoaibi, co-written by Mark Tonderai.

The rest of the Tiger Aspect film team includes former ICM agent Amanda Davis, who will oversee the development slate as well as producing, and Cass Burnham, who takes the role of films coordinator.

Greg Brenman will also produce features while continuing to spearhead Tiger Aspect’s TV drama slate.

The new film company’s projects in development include “Tosspot,” written and directed by Tony Grounds, to be produced by Brenman; and “Driving Big Davie,” a comic road movie by Ulster writer Colin Bateman.

As a TV producer, Tiger Aspect is one of the U.K.’s leading comedy and drama specialists.
