Walt Disney Pictures and its subsidiary Jumbo Pictures Inc. have partnered to release the animated “Doug’s 1st Movie” theatrically on March 26.
Originally skedded for a direct-to-video launch, the 90-minute pic, based on Jumbo’s television series “Disney’s Doug” on ABC’s “Disney’s One Saturday Morning,” deals with the misadventures of quirky 12-year-old Doug Funnie. This is Jumbo’s first major theatrical release.
Jim Jinkins and David Campbell produce and executive produce the pic, helmed by Maurice Joyce. Jack Spillum and Melanie Grisanti produce.
“The folks at Jumbo Pictures have come up with a first-rate film and from the moment we saw it, we knew it belonged on the bigscreen,” said Walt Disney Studios chairman Joe Roth in a statement.
A theatrical release also will boost the film’s ancillary value.
The Walt Disney Co. acquired New York-based Jumbo Pictures in 1996. The company also produces the animated “Disney’s PB & J Otters” for The Disney Channel and “Disney’s 101 Dalmatians: The Series.”
