Houwer to receive Golden Calf

AMSTERDAM — Dutch-born director Paul Verhoeven’s classic 1973 film “Turkish Delight” has been selected the best Dutch film of the century.

Verhoeven and “Turkish Delight” producer Rob Houwer will receive a special Golden Calf, Holland’s highest film award, during the Netherlands Film Festival, the annual showcase of Dutch films set for Sept. 22-Oct. 1 in Utrecht.

Pic, a love story starring Rutger Hauer and Monique van de Ven, was the clear choice by auds and more than 200 professionals in the Dutch film and television world. Verhoeven’s “Soldier of the Queen” came in second in the poll.

The fest program this year will feature a sidebar event showcasing Dutch film over the last 100 years, as well as a retrospective of the 50-plus films and other works of Dutch producer and arthouse theater owner Matthijs Van Heijningen.

Van Heijningen’s film company, Sigma Films, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, but the Dutch producer has been in the biz for more than 30 years. His credits include Oscar winner Marleen Gorris’ “Broken Mirrors” and Dick Maas’ “The Elevator.”
