Le Studio Canal Plus has officially committed to fully financing the Good Machine pic “Human Nature,” from a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman (“Being John Malkovich”).
As originally reported in Daily Variety (Sept. 10, 1999), Good Machine had planned to co-finance the pic with Canal Plus.
Pic, to star Patricia Arquette, will be helmed by musicvid director Michel Gondry. Good Machine’s Ted Hope, Anthony Bregman, Kaufman and helmer Spike Jonze will produce.
“Human Nature” is a quirky tale of a woman in love with a man in love with another woman — and all three have designs on a young man raised as an ape.
Kaufman and Jonze’s collaboration on “Being John Malkovich” won them the Gran Prix Award at the Deauville Film Festival as well as the Fipresci award for best film (out of competition) at the Venice Film Festival. Pic has grossed nearly $9 million to date.
Canal Plus will handle all international sales and Good Machine will handle domestic sales. “Human Nature” has yet to find a domestic distributor.
Arquette appears in “Stigmata” and Martin Scorsese’s “Bringing Out the Dead.”
Good Machine’s Ang Lee-helmed “Ride With the Devil,” distributed by Universal Pictures/USA Films, opens today in limited release.
