TOKYO — Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) said Tuesday that it has acquired the Japanese DVD rights to selected movies from Universal Studios and will release about five titles a month starting in June.
The deal is the first that Sony Pictures Japan has reached with a studio not in the Sony Pictures group. Some of the Universal films to be released include “Twister,” “Sea of Love” and “Daylight.”
The Sony Pictures division has released 77 DVD titles in Japan since it set up the biz in fall 1997 and is planning to release about 120 titles this year. Most of the films have been titles from Sony’s Columbia TriStar Pictures arm.
