Mobilcom preps ‘Net access tool

Set-top boxes set for July release

BERLIN — Mobilcom, one of Germany’s new telecommunication companies, may soon be introducing a set-top box that will allow Internet access through TV sets.

As reported in industry magazine Chip, users will be able to surf the ‘Net via their televisions for DM 29 ($16) a month with the help of a cordless keyboard.

Mobilcom is still in negotiations with box-manufacturer Infomatec, but officials say the service could be available as early as July.

Since the deregulation of Germany’s telecommunication market last year, Mobilcom has been trying to compete with Deutsche Telekom for long distance services.
