Visual effects guru Mark Lasoff (“Titanic”) has joined Stan Lee Media as executive veep overseeing production of the Web-based company’s upcoming superhero projects.
Prior to taking the new position in July, Lasoff created visuals for Disney’s computer-generated feature “Dinosaur,” which mixes live-action backgrounds with animated characters.
Company chairman and chief creative officer Stan Lee, creator of the X-Men, Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man franchises, is launching “The Seventh Portal,” a new online-based comic book, and introducing other superhero characters through the company’s multimedia arm and Web sites StanLeeMedia.com and StanLee.net.
The goal is to appeal to comic book fans ages 8-16.
“The fastest, most efficient way to launch new characters and stories today is via the Internet,” Lasoff said.
Stan Lee plans to cross over online characters into features, TV and comic books — the reverse of what traditional media companies are doing.
Lasoff won an Oscar for his work as digital effects supervisor on “Titanic” at Digital Domain, performed similar duties on “Apollo 13” and worked on “Total Recall” and “True Lies.”
