Webcaster expanding network

Former ABC sales and marketing VP Peter Desnoes has accepted the position of CEO at iBeam Broadcasting, a satellite-based distributor of streaming media on the Internet.

Desnoes will guide the deployment of the San Francisco-based company’s satellite-based network, expected to launch in May, which will broadcast programming such as movies and TV shows on the Internet more quickly and clearly than ordinary phone-based modems.

iBeam is currently testing the service through more than 30 Internet service providers in the U.S. and Canada.

The iBeam Network enables telephone companies, cable operators and Internet service providers to bring near-VHS quality live and on-demand video to users of cable modems or high-speed DSL phone lines.

iBeam uses satellite broadcast technology to deliver streaming media on the Internet, employing computer servers called MaxCasters operated by Internet service providers.

iBeam, which is worth $50 million, intends to raise $150 million within the next 14 months to build the network.
