Even Hollywood’s golden age is hitting the Web.
BernardofHollywood.com, a Web site that features the works of late photographer Bruno Bernard — whose photos helped thrust Marilyn Monroe into the limelight — is bowing today, a venture that has been in the works for more than a year from his daughter, actress, producer and publisher Susan Bernard (“Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!” “General Hospital”).
The site is bowing during a Lifetime Achievement Award presentation for Bernard by Hollywood honorary mayor Johnny Grant at the Egyptian Theater. Bernard will accept for her father.
San Jose-based StudioFX created the entertainment and e-commerce site, which features much of Bernard’s collection of black and white and color photographs from Hollywood’s “golden age,” marking the first time that much of the collection has been available to the public.
The photographer established his Hollywood studio on the Sunset Strip in 1946, photographing such celebs as Monroe throughout her career (including the famous photos of her on the set of “The Seven Year Itch”), as well as shots of Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth and John Wayne on and off the set.
“It (Hollywood’s golden age) is a time and place that doesn’t exist anymore,” Bernard told Daily Variety. “Everything at that time was visual and about creating an image, about publicity. Change is good but maintaining the past is important. I have great respect for the Web. It engages millions.”
The new Web site includes photos from the 1940s through 1980s and includes chat events, interviews, as well as licensed merchandise and memorabilia including calendars, CD-Roms and five books based on Bernard’s work for sale.
The venture is a division of Susan Bernard’s Renaissance Road Prods., which also produces features. Her son Joshua Miller’s “The Mao Game,” preemed during AFI this year.
