ZURICH — Bertelsmann Online (BOL), the Internet branch of the German publishing group, has opened its sixth European e-commerce service in Switzerland.
Customers have access to some 4.5 million international book titles that can be ordered via the Internet at BOL.com.
BOL launched similar services in Germany, France and the U.K. earlier this year and will soon enter the Dutch and Spanish markets as well.
“After only a few months we are already No. 2 in Europe,” Heinz Wermelinger, BOL Intl. prexy and chief exec said Wednesday in a news conference in Zurich.
BOL sells some 4,000 books in Europe daily, with a monthly increase of 10%-15%.
Bertelsmann also plans to offer music on its site before the end of the year and, later, videos. In the U.S. Bertelsmann is partnered with barnesandnoble.com in an e-commerce joint venture.
