GERMANY

The head of financially strapped foreign news channel Deutsche Welle said the broadcaster will have to lay off 745 of its approximately 1,700 employees due to severe budget cuts.

While most of the outgoing employees are freelancers, 163 full-time workers also will lose their jobs.

Deutsche Welle managing director Dieter Weirich has been calling for a raise in TV fees to save the foreign channel, while other pubcaster officials have said the Deutsche Welle, which airs internationally in German, English and Spanish, should be folded into a world service European broadcaster.

The domination of multiplexes continues in Germany: One of the largest Teutonic exhibitors, Ufa, is set to open multiplexes in Berlin and Kassel, while construction will begin soon in the city of Aachen on the new Ufa Palast, which will offer seating for more than 2,500 viewers upon completion late next year.

Competition from other multiplexes has forced Ufa to shut down two of its old-fashioned movie theaters, the Berolina and Residenz, in Dusseldorf.
