Sundance Cinemas, the joint venture between General Cinema Theatres and Robert Redford, plans to open an 11-screen arthouse across the street from Boston’s Fenway Park.
Boston is the third location announced by Sundance Cinemas. Other theaters will be opened in Portland, Ore., and Philadelphia.
“The Sundance Cinema center is a unique opportunity to combine urban redevelopment with culture, art and architecture to create a public space which will foster education, communication and community,” Redford said.
Sox ‘n’ cinema
“As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I’m especially excited about our being in the shadow of Fenway.”
The Boston multiplex will be located on the site occupied by the Lansdowne parking garage owned by real estate developer John Rosenthal.
Construction of the 1,800-seat theater is expected to begin in early 2000 with the opening projected for early 2001.
In addition to exhibiting independent films, the Lansdowne Sundance Cinema will provide a venue for the performing arts. The multiplex will feature a restaurant, bar and a store selling videos and books.
