Murdoch aide tapped by Tories

Stelzer named to economic council

LONDON — A top aide to Rupert Murdoch has been appointed to the U.K. Conservative Party’s council of economic advisors, a move that could further better relations between the Tories and the media mogul.

Irwin Stelzer, a senior fellow and director of the Hudson Institute think-tank in the U.S., will serve as one of 15 economists on the council, which advises the Conservatives on economic policy.

Relations between Murdoch and the Conservatives have been strained since the last British general election in 1997, in which News Corp. publications such as the Times and the Sun were seen to favor now prime minister Tony Blair and the Labor Party.
