MIAMI — Hughes Electronics has appointed telco exec George Foyo to fill the long-empty post of president of satcaster Galaxy Latin America.
Foyo will join Galaxy effective Jan 3. He comes from AT&T, where he worked for more than 30 years, most recently as president and managing director of AT&T Caribbean and Latin American operations, a position he has held since 1995.
Foyo fills the spot left vacant by Jose Antonio Rios, a veteran TV exec who left the satcaster earlier this year to join Spain’s Telefonica, where he now heads TV subsid Telefonica Media.
Cuban-born Foyo will report to Galaxy Latin America chairman Kevin McGrath, who had been filling in for Rios.
In addition to his responsibility for the day-to-day business operations and profitability of the satcaster, Foyo will be made a Hughes veep and a member of the Hughes management committee.
The satcaster is owned by Hughes and the Cisneros Group of Cos.
Galaxy Latin America’s DirecTV DTH service is available in all of Latin America’s major markets, mostly via partnerships with a local operator, and will soon launch in Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Foyo will be based at the regional operational offices in Fort Lauderdale.
