Morgan Wandell has been named veep of development for Digital Entertainment Network, the Santa Monica-based Internet programming startup.
Wandell comes to DEN from Disney’s Touchstone TV, where he was director of drama development. He’s reunited with his former Disney TV boss, David Neuman, who signed on as prexy of DEN last year after serving as Disney’s prexy of network TV.
DEN operates a Web site that offers original series — ranging from scripted serials to in-your-face reality fare — aimed at the niche market among young, new-media savvy adults. The company is plowing significant coin into original production in and around its cavernous HQ in Santa Monica.
“What we appreciated about Morgan is that he has a real eye for talent, and he actually came to us to talk about his interest in developing Internet programming,” said DEN chief exec Jim Ritts. “He’ll bring a tremendous level of new talent and programming concepts to us.”
Wandell has been with Touchstone TV since 1996, starting out as manager of creative affairs. He said he’s long been a Webhead, and he’s anxious to adapt his TV development skills to the wild-and-woolly world of new media.
“Generation Y is so hungry for this kind of programming. I know there is a big audience for it,” Wandell said. “What’s interesting to me is the opportunity to create something entirely new.”
