Film to focus on whirlwind trip
Producer George Zaloom is developing a “Wonderful World of Disney” telefilm on the life of the pioneering, globetrotting femme journo Nellie Bly.
Disney has optioned the TV rights to the recent Bly bio, “Nellie Bly: Daredevil, Reporter, Feminist,” by Brooke Kroeger. Vidpic will focus on Bly’s whirlwind, 72-day trip around the world in 1889, done on a dare to top the fictional challenge tackled in the Jules Verne novel “Around the World in 80 Days.”
Nellie Bly, known for her investigative reporting for the New York World and New York Journal, was the pseudonym used by Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, who died at age 55 in 1922.
A Disney TV spokeswoman confirmed the project is in development but declined to elaborate. Zaloom’s past telefilm productions for ABC include remakes of “The Shaggy Dog,” “Freaky Friday” and “Escape to Witch Mountain.”
