NEW YORK — Universal Studios announced Monday that an all-new Woody Woodpecker will come a’knocking this November with an animated series on Fox Kids Network.
The new Woody’s face-lift includes green eyes and streamlined features, although his personality remains, in the words of a Universal spokesperson, “sassy and mischievous.”
“The Woody Woodpecker Show,” representing the first programming that features the beaked character since 1979, will begin with 40 episodes, each containing three seven-minute shorts.
Bob Jaques of “The Ren and Stimpy Show” will produce and direct, with Jimmy Gomez, also of “Ren and Stimpy,” serving as writer/story editor.
The original 400-short library of Woody, created by Walter Lantz between 1940 and 1979, is still in syndication by Universal Intl. Television.
As for merchandising plans, the new Woody’s designation as “ambassador for Universal Studios Escape” — the destination resort slated to open next year in Orlando — merely begins the litany.
