Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who starred as Tim Allen’s son on “Home Improvement,” is leaving the show after the first two episodes this fall.
Thomas, a high school junior, said he wants time to “concentrate on his preparation for a top university.”
Touchstone TV released a statement, saying, “We are sorry to see Jonathan Taylor Thomas leave ‘Home Improvement,’ but we understand his desire to focus on his academic career.”
In the first two episodes this fall, “Home Improvement” will explain Thomas’ departure with a storyline that has him leaving home to pursue his interest in environmental issues through a work-study program. Thomas will return for one more holiday episode.
Thomas said in a statement that he is “thankful” Disney executives support his decision to “focus more on my studies,” and “I’m really going to miss all of the laughs.”
“Home Improvement” this fall will enter its eighth season, widely believed to be its last.
