SABC to unveil pay-TV sat operation by end of '98

The South African Broadcasting Corp (SABC) is to launch an Africa-wide pay-TV satellite news service by the end of the year.

“For the first time, Africa will broadcast African news to Africa,” said Allister Sparks, the man who will head the service.

A second pay channel to be known as Best of Africa will specialize in entertainment and will offer U.S. auteur draws top spot at Latvia film fest films, documentaries and music from the African continent.

The signal will be distributed by MultiChoice, which sends out DSTV satellite television throughout Africa.

Spokesman Enoch Sithole said SABC aims to earn revenues of 430 million rand ($70 million) in the first five years of operation of the two channels and that the revenue was expected to rise to $177 million in 10 years.
