Bloody Sunday subject of telepic
Jurnee Smollett, MacKenzie Astin, Stephanie Peyton, Clifton Powell and Yolanda King have inked to star in “Selma, Lord, Selma,” for ABC’s “Wonderful World of Disney.”
The two-hour telepic is based on two girls’ experiences during Bloody Sunday in Selma, Ala., — March 7, 1965, at the time of the voting rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge led by Martin Luther King Jr.
Yolanda King is the daughter of the slain civil rights leader.
Pic is being directed by Charles Burnett (“The Wedding”) from a script by Cynthia Whitcomb and Monte Merrick, and will begin shooting in Georgia and Alabama this week.
Esparza/Katz Prods. is producing in association with Walt Disney Television. Julian Fowles, Moctesuma Esparza and Bob Katz are executive producing.
“Selma” is scheduled to air the Sunday before Martin Luther King Day.
