Scripps slate sold

World 2000 buys TV projects; library stays

The newly formed World 2000 Prods. has purchased the development slate of Scripps Howard Prods. for an estimated $5 million to $8 million, but the Scripps Howard library will remain in the hands of the E.W. Scripps Co.

World 2000 Prods. is a partnership between the Irish entertainment company, World 2000 Entertainment Ltd., and executive producer Michele Brustin, who will serve as the company’s president and CEO.

World 2000 Entertainment is owned by producer Morgan O’Sullivan, TV exec Tom Palmieri and international financier Bernard Somers.

Rysher will continue to distribute the Scripps Howard library and World 2000 will handle some of the administrative details. Scripps did not return phone calls seeking comment about the status of the employees of Scripps Howard Prods.

Among the Scripps Howard Prods. projects now owned by World 2000 are TV movies and miniseries such as the CBS telefilm “The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax,” starring Angela Lansbury, and its sequel; the ABC mini “The Blackstone Chronicles;” and the CBS mini “Silent Treatment.”

Move into TV

World 2000 is hoping to expand into the TV series arena, mainly through co-productions with major studios.

Brustin is an experienced TV executive and producer, who has executive produced such projects as “Shadow of a Doubt” for NBC, “The Prosecutor” for NBC, “In the Company of Darkness” and “Night Sins” for CBS and “The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax.”

She also was a senior programming executive at NBC both in drama and comedy and she’s executive producer of a pilot in development at Paramount and NBC.

“This is an opportunity to take my strength and marry it to an entrepreneurial environment,” Brustin said.

It’s a tough time for indie companies to break into the business because networks are developing more product inhouse, and even the major studios are squeezed for ownership.

But Brustin said the proliferation of channels and demand for product gives the company more opportunities than might seem apparent initially.
