NEW YORK — “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” ABC’s hit primetime sitcom, will spawn an animated clone, which joins Buena Vista TV’s two-hour block of firstrun cartoons on the UPN Network Sunday through Friday beginning fall 1999.
Buena Vista will sell the four animated shows as a syndicated block to TV stations in the 25% of the U.S. where UPN hasn’t signed an affiliate. The three other half-hours in the block, previously announced, are “Disney’s Doug,” “Disney’s Recess” and “Disney’s Hercules.”
Since Paramount owns the live-action version of “Sabrina,” the Disney name won’t be in the title, which will be called “Sabrina the Animated Series.” DIC Entertainment and Paula Hart/Heartbreak Prods. will produce the cartoon Sabrina. Savage Steve Holland will be the executive producer.
Buena Vista calls the Sabrina cartoon a prequel, taking the character back to the age of 12. Aunt Hilda and Aunt Zelda, adults in the live-action series, will become teenagers in the cartoon. Melissa Joan Hart, who plays Sabrina in the ABC primetime series, will do the voices of Hilda and Zelda. Hart’s younger sister Emily will supply the voice of the animated Sabrina.
