WBPT to become Spanish-language shopping channel

NEW YORK — Paxson Communications has applied to the FCC to sell WBPT, its UHF TV station in Bridgeport, Conn., to a company that will turn it into a 24-hour, Spanish-language home-shopping service.

The purchasing company, Cuchifritos Communications, will pay $22 million for the station. Paxson was, in effect, forced to sell the station as part of the deal in which the FCC approved Paxson’s purchase of WPXN New York, whose signal overlaps with that of WBPT. Because of that overlap, WBPT never became an affiliate of Paxson’s Pax-TV seventh broadcast network made up mostly of reruns of family shows like “Touched by an Angel” and “Diagnosis Murder.”
