‘Mandel’ ratings rise in flat yak pack week

Par strip enjoys 13% increase

Frosh talker “The Howie Mandel Show” saw a modest ratings increase in the week ended Aug. 9, which was an uneventful week for the rest of the daytime syndie yak pack.

Paramount’s “Howie Mandel” rose 13% to a 1.7 national Nielsen household rating, from a 1.5 the previous week. The day-by-day ratings breakdown reveals that the spike was fueled by the Aug. 4 appearance of Whoopi Goldberg and Jenny McCarthy’s visit to the fledgling talk-variety strip on Aug. 6.

The summer’s other syndie newcomer, Twentieth TV’s “Forgive or Forget,” lost a little of its momentum, dropping 6% from the previous week to a 1.5.

Springer strong

Among the established talkers, Studios USA’s “Jerry Springer Show” led the field, in spite of a 4% week-to-week dip to a 7.2. King World’s “Oprah Winfrey” eased 2% to a 6.0, while Warner Bros.’ “Jenny Jones” upticked 5% to a 4.4.

Studios USA’s “Sally Jessy Raphael” dipped 2% to a 4.1. Par’s “Montel Williams” was unchanged from the previous week at a 3.9. Columbia TriStar’s “Ricki Lake” dropped 11% to a 3.4, to tie with Buena Vista TV’s “Live With Regis & Kathie Lee,” off 9% from week-to-week.

In the magazine show arena, Par’s “Entertainment Tonight” was on top with a 6% week-to-week hike to a 5.1. Warner Bros.’ “Extra” was off 3% to a 3.7. King World’s “Inside Edition” was flat at a 3.6, as was Par’s “Hard Copy” at a 2.8. NBC/Twentieth TV’s “Access Hollywood” rose 10% to a 2.3.

Courtroom drama

Competition in the courtroom TV genre is poised to heat up as two new strips enter the fray. Rysher Entertainment’s “Judge Mills Lane” opened this week to respectable numbers, so far, while Worldvision’s “Judge Joe Brown” convenes his court next month.

Worldvision’s “Judge Judy” heads into its third season next month as a solid hit. For the week ended Aug. 9, “Judge Judy” was flat at a 5.1, while rival jurist Ed Koch of “The People’s Court” slipped 4% from the previous week to a 2.4.
