Gary Sinise, who won for lead actor in a miniseries or special for “George Wallace,” heard the news that the former Alabama governor had died just before he walked into the pressroom.
Sinise took a moment to compose his thoughts and then said, “It’s a strange feeling. I really believe George Wallace had a spiritual redemption happen to him. Possibly, it took getting shot to make it happen and if he hadn’t been shot, who knows what would have happened and where his life would have gone.
“But a strong reason for me doing this film is George Wallace went to Martin Luther King’s church and begged for forgiveness of the congregation after he’d been shot. … He changed and tried to make amends and repair some of what he’d done.”
