Fox News earns its best Nielsen marks

Ratings boosted by Starr report

Fox News Channel hit a ratings milestone Saturday, earning its best total-day Nielsen marks since bowing in October 1996.

No doubt boosted by viewer interest in the steamy details of independent counsel Kenneth Starr’s report to Congress, the fledgling all-news cabler snagged a 0.6 rating for the 24-hour frame, according to Nielsen data released Tuesday. That translates into an average of 209,000 viewers in FNC’s universe of 34 million homes.

In primetime, FNC soared to a 1.1 rating and 365,000 homes, besting all-news outlets MSNBC (1.0/427,000 homes) and CNN (0.8/624,000) in ratings but not overall viewers.
