‘Dumbest Criminals’ gets makeover for new season

Alan set to co-host with Butler

The syndie strip “America’s Dumbest Criminals” is being retooled going into its third season, nabbing a new production company, co-host and set.

Nashville-based Speer Communications has inked a deal with series distributor Worldvision Enterprises Inc., a subsidiary of Spelling Entertainment, to produce the reality/comedy strip’s third season, also taped in Nashville.

Debbie Alan, a former location reporter for “Extra” and host of Nashville’s daily magazine show “Talk of the Town” has been tapped to co-host “America’s Dumbest Criminals” alongside original host and creator Daniel Butler.

The strip’s set, art direction and format will change from a single shot news desk look to a more contemporary, multilevel set allowing the show’s hosts to interact with a live studio audience.

Nashville songwriters Wayne Kirkpatrick and Billy Sprague also are recording a new theme song for the show.

New episodes of “America’s Dumbest Criminals,” based on Daniel Butler’s bestselling book of the same name, are slated to debut Sept. 14 in about 89 % of the country.
