Discovery, BBC plan 2nd India channel

Toss-up between animals and people

NEW DELHI — The Discovery Channel and its worldwide partner the BBC plan to launch a second channel in the region within a year. Discovery is in the process of finalizing the choice of the channel: either Animal Planet or People & Arts, which already air in other regions around the world.

The partners are also planning to bring to the Indian market CD-Roms and homevideos, tentatively skedded for a December intro.

Discovery is pouring more money into its Indian operations, while the BBC has commissioned five Indian companies to produce programs for its BBC World channel. The nonfiction magazine shows are “Wheels,” “Style,” “Question Time,” “Indian Business Report” and “Mastermind.”
