Kidvid getting local makeover
MIAMI — Leading Argentina broadcaster Telefe has pacted with Mexico’s TV Azteca to produce a third, country-specific version of its kidvid hit “Chiquititas.”
Now in its fourth season in Argentina, and a remake hit for No. 2 web SBT in Brazil, the series will appear on Azteca’s Channel 13 by year’s end.
Telefe produces the foreign versions of the show in Buenos Aires, importing Brazilian and now Mexican casts.
Budgeted at a reported $75,000 per episode — high by local standards — “Chiquititas” concerns a group of orphaned children and mixes drama with comedy, dream sequences and easy-to-learn songs.
The show was recently honored at Spain’s Midia ’98 market as “Best Children’s Series” for the second year in a row, and the Brazilian version is SBT’s top ratings performer.
” ‘Chiquititas’ recently achieved a 22% share in Brazil in its 8 p.m. slot,” said Cesar Diaz, general manager of exporter Telefe Intl., who sold the show to Azteca’s Channel 13 topper Martin Luna.
