CBS News taps Leissner for D.C.

Journo fills Ortiz's shoes

CBS News has tapped Janet Leissner to head up its Washington bureau.

Leissner, a 14-year veteran of the Eye web, replaces Al Ortiz, who relocated to New York in August after being named executive producer of “The CBS Evening News With Dan Rather.”

Leissner has been a New York-based senior producer for “Evening News” since April 1996. Before that, she served as the newscast’s senior producer, based in Washington.

CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer, whose name had been mentioned as a candidate for the bureau chief job, issued a statement Wednesday praising Leissner as “exactly the right person” for the position. “She has terrific news judgment and is a great reporter,” he said.

Leissner joined CBS News in 1984 as a Washington producer for “Evening News.”
