Bergeron will host ‘Squares’

Chemistry with Whoopi ignited deal

Tom Bergeron has been signed as host of King World Prods.’ revival of “Hollywood Squares.”

Bergeron, most recently seen as a fill-in anchor on ABC’s “Good Morning, America,” will trade barbs with center square Whoopi Goldberg and other celeb panelists on the campy quiz show, whose latest incarnation bows Sept. 14 in national syndication.

“We auditioned more than 50 people for this important spot, and it was like spontaneous combustion when we put Tom together with Whoopi,” said Andy Friendly, KW’s exec VP of programming and production.

Bergeron, a veteran of local TV and radio in Boston, gained national recognition in 1994 as host of the FX cabler’s offbeat “After Breakfast” show, which was picked up by Fox Broadcasting Co. in 1996-97. Bergeron’s deal with King World was brokered by Babette Perry of Ken Lindner & Associates.
