Prod co to debut Spanish-lingo talker, reach bilingual auds
As a sign of Hollywood’s growing interest in the Hispanic TV market, industry veteran Richard Melcombe has teamed with producer Dan Guerrero, previously of Paul Rodriguez Prods., to launch Senorita Anita Prods. Aimed primarily at domestic TV outlets, Senorita Anita was created to develop Spanish-lingo and Hispanic-themed programming for the ever- increasing audience.
Senorita Anita, based on the KTLA lot in Hollywood, has inked a deal with the Telemundo network to produce a daily talk-variety show hosted by thesp Maria Conchita Alonso (“The House of the Spirits,” “Moscow on the Hudson”). Telemundo, acquired late last year by TV biz heavyweights Sony Pictures Entertainment and Liberty Media, has ordered 130 episodes of the Alonso show, set to debut this spring.
“Our mission is to become the best Spanish-language production company in the U.S.,” said Melcombe, who established Senorita Anita as an arm of his Richmel Prods. earlier this year.
“We’re trying to bridge Latino culture with a U.S. sensibility,” said Guerrero. “There are a huge amount of Latinos like myself who are bilingual but don’t watch much Spanish-language TV because the scope of the programming is not as wide as it could be. We want to change that.”
