Putting heart in soul

Kudocast fetes Carey, Khan

Urban music heralded its ladies of song at the fourth annual Soul Train Lady of Soul awards Sept. 3. The kudocast, held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, honored the top women of hip hop, R&B, soul, gospel and jazz — not only recognizing artists with current releases, but also those who have contributed significantly to their craft. Chart-topping songbird Mariah Carey and the legendary Chaka Khan were saluted with the Aretha Franklin Entertainer of the Year award and the Lena Horne award for Outstanding Career Achievements, respectively.

Other notables on hand included Maxwell, Lil’ Kim, Mary J. Blige, Monica, Montell Jordan, Stevie Wonder, comedian Chris Tucker, and Tia and Tamera Mowry.
