‘Delta’ dawns in Gotham

Angelou pic kicks off Urbanworld

Maya Angelou’s directorial debut “Down in the Delta” kicked off the second annual Urbanworld Film Festival on Aug. 5 in Gotham.

Harvey Weinstein, whose Miramax Films is distributing the Mississippi-set pic, was joined by Angelou and the film’s star, Wesley Snipes, for the screening at the Cineplex Odeon Encore Worldwide and a party following at Veruka in Soho. Two of the film’s producers, Reuben Cannon and Victor McGauley, also were on hand.

Among the crowd of some 450 opening night revelers were Alan Cumming, star of the erstwhile Broadway hit “Cabaret,” helmer John Singleton and Howard Dodson, director of Harlem’s Schomberg Center.
