Angel South

Angel South, lead guitarist with the early ’70s band Chase who later wrote novelty songs, died of prostate cancer June 4 in Placerville. He was 55.

Born Lucien Gondron in Port Arthur, Texas, South played in bands with Janis Joplin, Edgar and Johnny Winter, and B.J. Thomas.

In 1969, trumpeter Bill Chase recruited him to join his jazz rock band. It was Bill Chase who gave Gondron his new name. South performed with the band until 1972.He is survived by his wife.
