AUSTRALIAVillage Cinemas confirmed it has sold its flagship multiplex in George Street, Sydney, for an undisclosed amount and will relocate to the nearby Hoyts complex. The Hoyts Center, which will be renamed the Village Hoyts Center, will be enlarged from seven to 13 or 14 screens and completely refurbished. Village said the site, which no longer meets its standards, will be demolished and replaced with a residential and hotel development. LATIN AMERICA Telenovela distrib Coral Pictures has pacted with CBS TeleNoticias to distribute programming from the Latino cable news-net to broadcasters worldwide, excepting several Latin American territories. TeleNoticias already has substantial carriage via cable and UHF outlets in Latin America but is under the gun to reach operational break-even by year end and hopes syndie sales will increase revenues. TeleNoticias shows include Larry King-style talkshow “En Directo con Jaime Bayly,” interview hour “America Habla,” entertainment news slot “Mas Vida” and debate show “Polos Opuestos.” POLAND Twentieth Century Fox Intl. Television has entered into a multiyear output agreement with Warsaw-based broadcaster Polsat. Under the terms of the deal, Fox will provide Polsat with programming from its extensive library. The partnership includes exclusive territorial rights in Poland for a variety of Fox product, including “Titanic” and “Independence Day.” In addition, the agreement includes exclusive distribution rights to new series from 20th Century Fox Television beginning with the 1998-99 season. CZECH REPUBLIC The first year results of people meters in the Czech Republic show that last year’s top-rated show in was Nova TV’s ‘Miss of the Decade.’ Its 52.3 rating outstripped competition from Finland’s ‘Miss Suomi 1997’ (in eighth place with 36.0), and Sweden’s second place showing of ‘Donald Duck’ (drawing 51.5) on Christmas Eve. People meters haven’t always been so kind to Nova TV. Their introduction a year ago took Nova down a peg or two, from earlier claims of an audience share exceeding 70%. Its share for the past 12 months was 51.15%, making it still the clear market leader out of four national channels. AUSTRIA The first round of voting for a new general director for Austrian pubcaster ORF ended in a split vote. Neither of the two candidates got the two-thirds majority required during the Monday session. Peter Radel, ORF financial director, and Gerhard Weis, secretary general and director of radio for ORF, will go head-to-head again in a second round on July 6.
