WB picks up Spanish ‘Girl’

Pic currently shooting in Prague

Warner Bros. has snatched Latin-American rights to Spanish-language comedy “The Girl of Your Dreams”.

Starring Penelope Cruz, and produced by Lola Films, Fernando Trueba PC and Cartel, “Girl” is directed by Fernando Trueba who won a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1994 for “Belle Epoque.” It’s currently shooting in Prague. World sales are handled by Vine Intl.

“Girl” follows the cast and director of a Spanish film who leave Spain during the Civil War only to end up making a super-production at the Ufa Studios in Nazi Germany.

The WB deal for Latin America plays off the prestige of Trueba (“Two Much”) and the growing international projection of Cruz (“Open Your Eyes”, “Man With Rain in His Shoes”). It marks one of the first times ever that a Spanish-language film has struck a major pre-sale with a U.S. studio.
