Agnes Jaoui & Jean-Pierre Bacri

Team is a force to be reckoned with

PARIS — Considered to be the hottest writing double act in Paris at the moment, Agnes Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri remain relatively unknown quantities Stateside, partly because neither is a particular fan of remakes and partly because Bacri probably would prefer root canal work to getting on an airplane.

If all goes well, they will complete their latest untitled pic by the end of October. “At least I hope that’s when we will finish,” Bacri says. “Then we intend to write a new play.” He won’t give details of the film, except to say that their recently created production shingle, Les Films A4, will co-produce.

To date, the duo have turned out four critical and box office hits, starting with their adaptation of their own legit hit “Cuisine et Dependences.” They then moved on to the Alain Resnais double bill “Smoking/No Smoking,” wrote and acted in “Un Air de Famille” and did the same in musical comedy “On Connait la Chanson.”

Rarities in Paris because they write, but they haven’t yet directed, Jaoui says she is the more likely of the two to tread that path.

Bacri and Jaoui’s string of hits have made them a force to be reckoned with. They write at their own pace and then look for a producer they think they can work with. “We have the luxury of not being forced to write against the clock,” says Bacri, who admits that deadlines drive him into a temper.

“These are people who don’t suffer fools gladly. In fact they don’t suffer fools at all,” says “Un Air de Famille” producer Charles Gassot with a smile.
