Wagner goes against type

Nice-guy thesp chooses two dark roles

NEW YORK — Although he’s best known for playing leading man, nice-guy roles, Robert Wagner has taken starring roles in two movies, playing unsavory types in both.

Wagner will play a rough and tough pimp starring alongside Lolita Davidovich and Christina Ricci in “No Vacancy,” a bittersweet romantic comedy of sex, drugs and violin music set in a rundown motel in Hollywood. Ron Shelton is the exec producer and Marius Balchunas is directing his own script on the indie film. Tom Todoroff is the producer and Eric Koskin and Andrea Sperling exec produce with Shelton.

Wagner, who just completed starring opposite Lisa Zane in the title role of the indie film “The Kidnapping of Chris Burden,” has also pacted to reprise his role as Dr. Evil’s henchman Number Two in the New Line sequel to “Austin Powers,” which stars Mike Myers and Heather Graham and is directed by Jay Roach. Wagner, who also completed co-starring with Melanie Griffith in the Antonio Banderas-directed “Crazy in Alabama,” is managed by Chuck Binder.
