Studio pays low six figures for Bleidner treatment
Universal Pictures has picked up Larry Bleidner’s 10-page treatment “The Norfolk Quiz Club” for “Breakdown” helmer Jonathan Mostow to possibly direct.
U paid $100,000 against $300,000 for the treatment, which several studios pursued, including Disney.
Mostow and his partner Hal Lieberman will produce along with Warren Zide and Craig Perry of Zide/Perry Films. Bleidner will not be attached to script.
Pic, described as “‘Quiz Show’ meets ‘Shawshank Redemption,'” will be about the true story of prison inmates who band together for a quiz show team and start to beat colleges in competitions.
In a rare instance of credit-giving in this industry, Lieberman said that Mostow’s assistant Paul Brehme found and solicited the material for Mostow/ Lieberman Prods. along with Scott Bernstein, creative exec.
J.C. Spink, a director of development with Zide/Perry, brought the project into his production firm.
Attorney Bennett Fidlow repped Bleidner in the deal. Attorney Jeff Frankel handled the Zide/Perry interests. Attorney Alan Wertheimer of Armstrong & Hirsch repped Mostow/Lieberman.
