Tucci’s ‘Dream’ role: Puck

Kline, Pfeiffer, Flockhart also in Shakespearean tale

Stanley Tucci has signed to play the role of Puck in the Michael Hoffman-directed “Midsummer Night’s Dream” for Fox Searchlight.

Tucci joins Kevin Kline, Rupert Everett, Michelle Pfeiffer, Calista Flockhart, Anna Friel, Dominic West, Christian Bale, David Strathairn, Sophie Marceau and Sam Rockwell.

Hoffman adapted the script from the William Shakespeare play.

Hoffman’s “Dream” takes place in turn-of-the-century Tuscany. Puck is the servant of Oberon (Everett), the king of the fairies. Puck’s antics make Bottom (Kline) the recipient of a spell that leaves him with a donkey’s head. That complicates things for Titania (Pfeiffer), the queen of the fairies who is given a potion that will make her fall in love with the next person she sees. That turns to be the donkey-topped Bottom.

The film, which just began shooting in Italy, is produced by Leslie Urdang. It will be released spring 1999. Tucci is repped by William Morris’ Frank Frattaroli.
